The chessboard symbolises the world. It originates from India, and corresponds to the maṇḍala, the simplified representation of cosmic cycles, transformed into a geometric scheme on the chessboard. The figures moving on the scheme of the world symbolise two armies, the devas and asuras or angels and demons fighting each other on the cosmic battlefield.
